Reflective Poem by Henri Nouwen

Shortly after I began working at St. Thomas Aquinas, I found this reflective poem by Henri Nouwen. It is a framed print in the St. Thomas library.

"When we have found the anchor places for our lives in our own center

Compassion must become the core and event the nature of authority.

We can be free to let others into the space for them
And allow them to dance their own dance,
Sing their own song and
Speak their own language without fear.

Friendship has always belonged to the core of my spiritual journey.

Then our presence is no longer threatening and demanding,
But inviting and liberating.

He who wants to bring about change has first of all to
Learn to be changed by those he wants to help.
